Highland Community Builders

Highland Community Builders will secure property to launch a warming shelter in Randolph County that will operate from October 2022 through March 2023. The warming shelter will open when the temperature falls to 32 degrees or below and serve clients on a “come as you are” basis. Highland Community Builders will also provide client transportation from several pick up stops across the county to the warming shelter.

The West Virginia Hemophilia Foundation will work with the WV Oral Health Coalition to engage dentists to provide dental treatment to individuals with bleeding disorders. The program will include a continuing education course for dentists on treating patients with bleeding disorders. The West Virginia Hemophilia Foundation will provide financial assistance to individuals with bleeding disorders who are unable to afford their insurance deductible, copays, or other out-of-pocket dental care costs.

Will be providing complete traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas meal packages to Upshur County residents meeting the Parish House financial need criteria. Each meal package will contain, at a minimum, turkey or ham, potatoes (white and/or sweet), green beans, corn, cake mix or pie filling, and stuffing. Items will be purchased from local businesses and farmers to further support the community.

A collaborative group of Wesleyan faculty and community members will research, identify, and begin to implement targeted initiatives to address the substance use disorder problem in the region. An on-campus symposium, An Integrated Approach to Substance Use Disorder Recovery, was hosted in September. Symposium presenters and attendees included healthcare providers, people in recovery, researchers, individuals and families, criminal justice workers, educators, and governmental officials. Participants and others will be invited to participate in two regional community events. The first, in collaboration with the WV Office of Drug Control Policy, the group will present City of Solutions. This will be followed with a deliberative community dialogue on community approaches to substance use recovery. These community gatherings will conclude with development of action steps to implement specific initiatives identified by community members.
